✅ Step 1: Choose a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

-Only schools approved by the Canadian government can host international students.

-Ensure the DLI offers PGWP-eligible programs. Not all of them do, even if they’re accredited so double check.

-You can check here: Designated Learning Institutions List (use google).

✅ Step 2: Meet Academic & Language Requirements

-Most colleges and universities require:

•A minimum GPA or second-class upper (2:1) for graduate studies.

•Proof of English proficiency: IELTS Academic (minimum usually 6.5 overall), TOEFL, or PTE. (Most schools may offer waiver to you under certain conditions).

✅ Step 3: Apply to the Program

Prepare:

• Academic transcripts

• Degree certificates

• Personal statement or letter of intent

• 2–3 recommendation letters

• Resume/CV

• Apply through the school’s website or admission portal.

• Pay the application fee

(varies by institution, typically CAD $100–$150 or less).

✅ Step 4: Receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA)

• Once admitted, your LOA must come from a PGWP-eligible DLI for you to qualify for a Postgraduate Work Permit later.

✅ Step 5: Apply for a Study Permit

Apply online through the IRCC portal (Canada’s Immigration Website):

Apply Online - IRCC

You’ll need:

• Letter of Acceptance (LOA)

• Proof of funds (approx. CAD $20,635 for Ontario/BC or CAD $15,078 for other provinces in 2025)

• Tuition payment receipt (if already paid)

• Valid passport

• Biometrics

• Medical exam (for Nigerians, often required)

• Statement of Purpose

• Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) (New 2024/2025 requirement)

✅ Step 6: Arrive in Canada and Study Full-Time

You must remain in full-time studies to remain eligible for a PGWP after graduation.

✅ Step 7: Apply for the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

After graduation, apply within 180 days of receiving your final grades.

Key rules:

1. The length of the PGWP depends on your program:

2. 8 months–2 years of study = same length of PGWP

3. 2 years or more = up to 3-year PGWP

4. Only one PGWP is issued per person, plan wisely!

🛑 Important Notes for 2025

1. Cap on study permits: Fewer permits are being approved to manage immigration.

2. PAL requirement: Your province must approve and issue a letter confirming your spot.

3. Spouse/children restrictions: Only students in master’s, PhD, and a few professional programs can bring spouses with open work permits.
